Proposed new political map for Thanet

The Local Government Boundary Commission is redrawing the boundaries in Thanet for district elections. The ten-week consultation on the proposed changes to the district’s political map will run until 16 December 2024.

Your ward determines where you vote and who represents you in Thanet District Council. The Commission has published proposals for changes to Thanet showing that most wards will change. The proposal is that there should be 42 councillors representing 20 wards. At present, there are 56 councillors in 23 wards.

The proposed changes include:

• The creation of a new, single-councillor Westwood Cross ward
• The five wards in Broadstairs & St Peter’s reorganised into three: Broadstairs North, Broadstairs South and St Peter’s
• Most wards will have 2 representatives
• 14 fewer councillors
• 3 fewer wards

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England is an independent body accountable to Parliament. It recommends fair electoral and boundary arrangements for local authorities in England. This proposal is for the district council ward boundaries.

We want people in Thanet to help us. 

We have drawn up proposals for new wards in Thanet. We want to make sure these new electoral arrangements reflect communities. We also want them to be easy to understand and convenient for local people.

Residents and local organisations can help us do that. We would like them to let us know whether they agree with our proposals before we take final decisions.
